Tsunami Relief:  The Indian sub-continent was devastated by the Tsunami of 2004.  Thousands of people died and hundreds of children were orphaned.  The WISE Foundation funded relief for this tragedy by supporting the emergency relief measures and reconstruction undertaken by Project Hope in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu.

ORPHANAGE INAUGURATION

Project Hope has constructed an orphanage in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, for children orphaned by the tsunami, and for many girls who were orphaned before the tsunami. The orphanage includes approximately 450 children (more than 350 of whom are girls) and includes:

• A school
• Primary medical facilities/clinic
• A computer center
• A science center & laboratory
• Vocational training facilities
• Dormitory facilities
• Huge Dining Hall and Kitchen facilities

This work has been made possible through the generosity of the Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel Foundation for Global Understanding, and Smt. Bellaben and Shri Yogeshbhai Patel of Tampa, Florida.

One of the Indian areas affected by the December 2004 Tsunami was the Village of Devanampattnam.  It was virtually destroyed and all homes within 500 feet of the beach were washed away with the resulting loss of most if not all of the family's possessions.  In all over 3,000 family's were affected by this disaster.

The reconstruction of the village at Devanampattnam was approached in multiple phases.   In the first phase shown above, over 100 temporary homes and 300 tents were provided for the surviving villagers.

In response to the Tsunami devastation, Yogesh M. and Bella Y. Patel Foundation, along with Drs. Kiran and Pallavi Patel, built a compound consisting of an orphanage for 300 children a home for 200 destitute widows and women.  The compound contains a school, computer center, clinic, science lab, dormitory facilities, a full dining hall, kitchen facilities and vocational / catering training centers.

Yogesh M. and Bella Y. Patel attended the Bhoomi puja or groundbreaking ceremony for the orphanage and home for widowed women in Cuddalore.  His Excellency the Honorable Lt. Governor of Pondicherry and Pujya Swamiji of Parmarth Niketan Ashram also attended the ceremony.
