Self Help Groups (SHGs)

Each of the Gujarat Self Help Groups (SHGs) are registered with government agencies and have opened their own bank accounts. The SHG’s meet regularly once a month to discuss plans for various economic activities that they would like to undertake (individually or collectively) in the future.  So far, the women from the 3 villages in Dediapada have formed 24 Self Help Groups as noted below:

The SHG’s started primarily as a means to open bank accounts in which the payment for farm-bunding work can be deposited. The women from these villages have embraced this concept and have already formed about 50 SHGs (in 9 villages) in just one year. Similarly, women from remaining villages are also very enthusiastic about this and are in the process of forming and registering their groups. The groups instill pride and confidence in the women and they now demand more than what their prior life has offered them. They want to study at least up to 10th and beyond. They want to study Nursing or some other skills. Such ambitions may seem small to outsiders, but they represent a huge change for these girls. This is the first time these girls want to come out and do something new in their lives.

Cumulative work in two years

In the last two years, about 700 women from 9 villages have formed about 50 Self Help Groups (SHGs) and constructed about 3500 farm-bunds (50,000 cubic meters) on their farms in Dediapada taluka, for which we have paid them about Rs. 1,000,000.  In addition, about 45 women in two villages from Kawant taluka have also constructed about 1300 cubic meters of bunds, for which we have paid them about Rs. 26,000. The breakdown of the total work done by Village is given in Annex 1.
